Numbers 10 – Israel Go

The time has come,
The time is now.
Just go, go, go!
I’ll tell you how.

Silver trumpets sound,
That’s when all will know;
Time for battle or for feast,
Leaders meet and the nation go!

When the tabernacle cloud arise,
Or the pillar as of fire go by night;
As it leaves from that place,
All Israel move out at its sight.

Each tribe in its place,
Goes out in its way.
The people know it’s time,
Whe’r by night or by day.

They move on out,
All tribes in formation;
As a cross they proceed,
The Israelite nation.

Only YHWH does know,
Where their steps will all lead.
So the people with faith,
Do trust and concede.

Following cloud or fiery pillar,
The people proceed;
With faith and with hope,
YHWH’s all that they need.

When the time has come,
For the nation to settle;
The icon they follow,
Drift down as a petal.

Now the nation does rest,
Where cloud & fire remain.
Will they stay in peace,
Or will they go on and complain?

The time had come,
The time had went.
The people of Israel,
Had gone as been sent.

Leviticus 15 – Emissions

Everyone is unclean at some point in their lives.  Some of us just more so than others.  So what do you do when you have an unclean people and a holy God who can not stand uncleanness in His presence?  You don’t want their uncleanness to cause their destruction.  So how do you separate their uncleanness from YHWH’s tabernacle?

Well, the simplest and easiest way would be to set down some ground rules.  Set up some basic rules and expectations of ways to keep the uncleanness away from the presence of the one whose holiness would consume the one with the uncleanness.  Once that uncleanness is dealt with and accounted for, that should allow life to go on as needed.

Do we recognize our need to separate our sin from His holiness?  Do we attempt to pursue Him while still being consumed by our sins, or do we come to Him with a repentant heart?  Do we acknowledge our uncleanness emitted through our actions as sins, and do we come to Him for forgiveness; or do we just excuse them as “flaws” that give us character and personality?  What is our attitude about our uncleanness and the “emissions” in our lives?

Leviticus 10 – Strange Fire

I have been waiting for this chapter.  I knew that it was coming, and to some extent i have been dreading it.  After everything that has happened.  After all of the preparing and anointing and consecrating, the time comes for Aaron’s grown sons to step up and do their part, and what happens?  Immediately they mess it up.  It’s not even like they just forgot something.  It’s that they knew what they were supposed to do and purposely did the wrong thing.

We don’t know what they were thinking.  We don’t know their plans, or their purpose, or their intent.  All we know is what happened, and the response of YHWH God to their clear violation of his law.  They “offered strange fire before the LORD (YHWH)“.  Strong’s concordance describes this word “strange” as;

זוּר – zûr (zoor)
A primitive root; to turn aside (especially for lodging); hence to be a foreigner, strange, profane; specifically (active participle) to commit adultery: – (come from) another (man, place), fanner, go away, (e-) strange (-r, thing, woman).

So the word “strange” here is defined under the context of foreign (not natural), profane, and adulterous.  So we aren’t just talking about mixing up the spices differently than they were supposed to.  We are referring to a completely inappropriate and sinful offering given to YHWH, the one HOLY God.

Here are the priests, the ones who are to stand before YHWH and represent the people.  They are to be coming into God’s presence holy, bringing a holy sacrifice to cover the people and their sins, and what do they do on one of the first days of their job?  They offer a profane and adulterous offering to YHWH!  They insult YHWH and basically do their best to slap Him in the face.  YHWH’s response?  Fire comes out from His presence and consumes them!  They are destroyed on the spot.

When those who are supposed to be standing before the LORD and ministering to YHWH and the people are purposely rejecting and disobeying Him, what does it say about Him, and what does it mean for them?  Those who are leaders and ministers need to take His work seriously.  If we don’t, what will His response be to us.  Those who are leaders are held to a higher standard, but we also have the potential for a greater reward.  However, we MUST pursue the holiness of the LORD.

Leviticus 2 – The Grain Offering

If Leviticus 1 was all about the very basis of the sacrificial system (blood sacrifice) and its basis is the end of life, then Leviticus 2 is all about the celebration of life.  The grain offering is an offering of the fruit of the earth.  It is the fruit of the toil of man.  Man works 6 days a week, and he rests one.  His work is to bring food and provision for himself and his family.  God is the one that gives that provision.  He creates the seasons and produces the harvest.  He defines growth, life, and hope.  The grain and first fruits offerings are a celebration of that.

With the celebration of life is creativity and choices.  I see this represented here in the numerous ways that a grain offering can be prepared and presented.  It can come as just the grain with oil and frankincense, or it can come having been baked in an oven, or it can come from a griddle, or from a pan, or roasted in the fire.  Each has a reason and a purpose, and each can be an acceptable sacrifice and offering to the Lord.

A common theme here is that in each of these, part of the offering is sacrificed, and the other belongs to the priests.  They do not work without receiving from the fruit of their labor, and this is the fruit of their labor.

Also, what is the issue with leaven?  YHWH really can’t seem to stand it in anything that is offered to Him.  I don’t know why.  I know He has His reasons, but i certainly don’t know them.

Leviticus 1 – Offering

The establishment of religion clause.  That is what this government is all about.  It is government by YHWH for the people and for His glory.  After having come out of Exodus and understanding that one of the primary things that YHWH was giving the Israelite people was a means and way of finally being able to worship Him, we find the first chapter of Leviticus giving instructions on how to offer up an offering from  the flock or the herd.

This is the very base and foundation of offerings.  It is the very cornerstone of the sacrificial system.  The shedding of blood for the remission / covering of sins is what gives the people the ability to come before a holy God without being consumed by YHWH’s holiness in the form of fire.  Within the sacrificial system there are three primary sacrificial animals; the bull, the sheep, and the goat.  This chapter answers how to properly bring those sacrifices to the temple, priests, and YHWH.  Secondarily, it also answers to how to bring the sacrifice of a bird.

This sacrifice is the very core of the sacrificial system.  It is a necessary offering and it is complete… or about as complete as an imperfect sacrifice that only covers sin and does not remove them can be.  The true and perfect sacrifice… The fulfillment of the sacrificial system, Jesus the Christ, will not come for millenia yet.

Exodus 13 – Ownership

Looking at the chapter and trying to sum up the themes and basic concepts in one word brings me to the idea of ownership.  Verses 1-16 are an intermingling of two ideas that most of us would consider separate.  There are these very different and distinct concepts.  The first is that YHWH spared the firstborn of Israel, and as such they belong to the Lord.  Form here on out the firstborn, the one to open the womb, belongs to God.  They must be given to God, or they must be redeemed.  The second concept is that every year the people of Israel are to have seven days of unleavened bread and a feast at the end.  This is in celebration of the Lord passing-over the Israelite’s, destroying the Egyptians, and rescuing the people from slavery.  In honor of that event, Passover must be celebrated every year.  The people of Israel are to take ownership of the acknowledgment and remembrance of this event.  This should be something that they not only acknowledge and understand, but that they also celebrate.  The Israelite people must take ownership of the remembrance of this event.

What’s interesting to me, is that these two very distinct and separate concepts are so intermingled in these first 16 verses that as much as it seems like they should be different, it becomes clear that they are interconnected and dependent upon one another.  I can’t say that i fully understand it.  To me they seem like two very different concepts, but God seems to say otherwise.  How and why?

The final concept of ownership in this chapter goes from vs. 17 through the end of the chapter.  In this section God takes responsibility / ownership for the people of Israel.  He doesn’t just tell Moses to lead them to the Mountain of God; He leads them.  He goes before them in a cloud by day and a pillar of fire by night.  He does not leave this to someone else.  He takes ownership and does it himself.

We serve a God of words and actions.  He doesn’t just tell us to do something.  He makes it happen.  As a result He is also a God that expects action and ownership from us.  We are to take ownership of the tasks that He gives us to do.
